After weeks of learning massage techniques, Oconee School of Therapeutic Massage opens their Student Clinic each Thursday from 1 – 5 PM. During clinic, students experience the fast pace of a working spa and get to practice on loving locals from our surrounding community. From calling clients from the waiting room to showing off the techniques they learned in class, Student Clinic helps students prepare for working as Licensed Massage Therapists (LMT) after graduation.
The first Student Clinic is friends & family day! This exciting day helps students understand a the flow of a working spa, practice their massage skills, and perfect client interaction without the pressure of new faces. After morning class, students transform the classroom into a relaxing spa with 8 rooms and a beautiful reception area.
A big learning curve for LMT’s is timing. Students must set up for the next client in 15 minutes or less. This process includes stripping linens, sanitizing the massage table, chair, face cradle, bolsters, etc, replacing fresh linens, and entering notes from the previous massage. It feels like a whirlwind during friends & family day but, with practice, timing clicks and becomes a fun time where students can encourage each other or ask for help.
Under the supervision of the Clinic Supervisor, each student will get the opportunity to work the reception desk to gain even more valuable experience. They will greet clients, check them in, take payments, and handle back of the house duties like laundry and tidying the waiting area for the next round of clients.
At least once per semester, students will volunteer at Diva’s Who Win Freedom Center during their Student Clinic hours. Diva’s is a safe space for women to rebuild their lives after surviving sex trafficking, prostitution, and addiction. In addition to learning how to travel as a LMT, student’s get the opportunity to serve their community and connect with an incredible organization.

Where is the Student Clinic? In the classroom! Walk right in to 10 Simonton Bridge Road, Suite B, Watkinsville, GA, which is the white brick building behind Mama Ning’s Thai Restaurant, and you will be greeted by our students.
